We all have opportunities to make a difference in our communities . . . instead of just living there, there are people who take responsibility once they recognize a need, to help improve the quality of life and make a difference. SONYA SIMMONS has done just that. Four years ago, she created the Grassroots Farmers Market in her neighborhood in Harlem, New York, a community with a high incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. And wasn’t that she just had some extra time on her hands, her commitment and the market came about because she believes that by giving her neighbors easy access to organic fruits, produce and vegetables, and promoting the development of healthier eating habits . . . that people in her community could improve their health.
I’d be willing to bet that SONYA SIMMONS' GRASSROOTS FARMERS MARKET has had an even greater impact on far greater numbers of people than even she realizes, and it started with the commitment of one person. And in your community, that could be you . . . Think about it.
