Beth Battaglino Cahill, RN – Executive Director, Healthy Women

This week on TALK! with AUDREY: BETH BATTAGLINO CAHILL, RN the executive director of HealthyWomen.org, an independent health information source for women, joins me to talk about a survey conducted by Harris Interactive, that revealed how women are spending their time and to provide time-stretching tips for women.

Daylight Savings time just gave us an extra hour of sunshine in the morning, which a new survey shows is the most hectic time of the day for women. According to research released recently by HealthyWomen (HW), women’s busiest hours are in the early morning and early evening — very closely connected to the work day.

Some of the findings:

The survey found that the number one activity that takes time away from women is domestic chores. These findings affirm that despite women taking on greater roles outside the home, they are still very much constrained by household activities. Fortunately, they are also finding novel strategies to cope.

  • Women are doing more than ever. Women are working outside the home, yet are still spending significant time on domestic chores (49%), paying bills or running errands (47%) and almost a quarter of women (23%) said that their time-draining activities included personal communications chores such as making phone calls, texting and emailing.
  • Younger women have different time burdens. Younger women (ages 18-34) were more likely than those over 35 to cite communicating with others through phone calls, texts and email as an activity that keeps them from doing what they want. Younger women also are much more likely to say that personal hygiene takes up too much time.
  • Women would rather be spending their time on leisure pursuits or with friends and family. When asked what they would do if they had more time, the majority of women (65%) would use it for entertainment, such as reading, watching TV and using the Internet. More than half of the women we surveyed said they would spend time with friends or family (54%). Younger women wanted more “me time.” They were more likely to say that they would spend time ‘doing nothing’ or sleeping.

Denise Austin – Fitness Expert

This week on TALK! with AUDREY :

My guest is DENISE AUSTIN and she shares valuable tips on how to jumpstart a great fall fitness program. As the weather cools off and school activities take up more time, now is the time to get motivated and moving before the holidays. One way to establish your fitness routine and support a great cause is to train for the cure.

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™, presented by Energizer, is a 60-mile journey for thousands of women and men who want to make a personal difference in the fight against breast cancer. Over the course of three days, participants walk 60 miles to help raise millions of dollars for breast cancer research.

A great way you can help today is to become a fan of the Energizer Bunny on Facebook, where $1 will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every fan.

Denise’s Top 3 Fall Fitness Tips – Get motivated by training for a cause:

1. Be creative – when there’s good weather outside take a long walk or hike to get in your mileage. If it’s too cold or rainy, use an indoor treadmill as you watch your favorite shows on TV. Make sure you don’t find excuses to skip your workout!

2. Wear a pedometer – it’s important to set a mileage goal and a pedometer can help you track your steps and see how close you are to that goal. On average, about 2,000 steps equals one mile.

3. Make it fun – Find a friend to walk with you to encourage you and make you accountable for getting your mileage completed. Or join a walking group so you can meet new people and keep moving.

Talk! With Audrey - Lisi Harisson

Lisi Harrisson – Author of The New York Times Best-Selling MONSTER HIGH

This week on TALK! with AUDREY : Joining me this week is New York Times best-selling author LISI HARRISON. Her latest book MONSTER HIGH brings her wry humor and trademark wit to an engaging novel that’s a fresh twist on romance, teen angst and the challenges of fitting in. What I originally thought was a wonderful book for teens has a number of messages in it for us grown-ups as well!

Lisi Harrison’s work has been called “Like Sartre with lip gloss” by Time magazine and she has been profiled by 20/20 for her remarkable ability to tap into the minds of today’s teens. For twelve years, she worked at MTV and worked her way up to Head Writer and then, Senior Director of Development. While still working in MTV, she began writing her Clique series which has sold over 8 million copies, has been on the New York Times bestseller list for over 200 weeks, and had ten titles from the series hit #1, in addition to her bestselling Alphas series.

In MONSTER HIGH readers meet “Frankie Stein” a typical teenager who happens to have mint-green skin and a body that is sewn together with stitches and runs on a battery. Frankie was just created 15 days ago by… you guessed it― the son of Frankenstein himself. Frankie may have a monstrous family history, but her horrors really begin when she enters the terrors of high school! People freak out over Frankie’s green skin instead of noticing her voltage fashion sense. And then she meets Melody Carver, a “normie” whose only monster quality is the recent rhinoplasty she had done on her new Jessica Biel-like nose. Melody has never been “the pretty one” before, and she feels like a fraud…until she meets Jackson. But is her new crush hiding something too?

With a cast of characters that include the fashionable teenage descendents of the world’s most famous monsters, Melody and Frankie try to put the chic in freak. But are the normies at Merston High ready for a makeover? Fitting in is out and freaky just got fabulous!

Laura Munson – New York Times Bestselling Author, This is Not The Story You Think It Is

This week on TALK! with AUDREY : My guest is LAURA MUNSON, the author of  THIS IS NOT THE STORY YOU THINK IT IS: A SEASON OF UNLIKELY HAPPINESS.

In the summer of 2009, The New York Times, had to temporarily shut down the comments section because of the overwhelming number of reader responses to an essay titled “Those Aren’t Fighting Words, Dear,” for the “Modern Love” column she wrote.

Laura Munson, a writer who lives in Montana, wrote the essay in response to the following words she heard one day from her husband of more than two decades: “I don’t love you anymore. I’m not sure I ever did. I’m moving out. The kids will understand. They’ll want me to be happy.” Laura touched a nerve with her essay, provoking thousands of responses from a remarkably diverse group of readers with her unexpected approach to crisis.

Munson’s account did not turn into the story you might expect—a divorce story, or a begging-him-to-stay story. Instead, after recovering from the initial shock, Munson calmly told her husband, “I don’t buy it. What can we do to give you the distance you need, without hurting the family?” Four months later, her marriage was not merely intact, but stronger than it had ever been.

Gail Caldwell – Pulitzer Prize Winner and Author of Let’s Take The Long Way Home

This week on TALK! with AUDREY : Joining me this week is Pulitzer Prize winner GAIL CALDWELL, author of LET’S TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME.

LET’S TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME  is an intensely moving memoir about Caldwell’s own coming-of-age in midlife, she writes frankly about the transition from being a fiercely private person to learning to share her life with an exuberant puppy and a new best friend, Caroline Knapp—a fellow writer, AA member, dog lover, and acute observer of life.

Together these two fiercely private, independent women relax into a friendship more profound than either of them ever expected, one that thrived on their shared interests as well as their parallel struggles with alcoholism and loneliness. They grow increasingly inseparable until Caroline is suddenly diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Gail Caldwell writes: “It’s the oldest of stories; I had a friend and we shared everything, and then she died and so we shared that, too.” Caldwell reminds us what makes friendship central to our lives.

Musa and Mayer and Donna Pelletier – Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer and National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day

This week on TALK! with AUDREY: My guests are (L to R) MUSA MAYER, M.S., M.F.A., a 21-year breast cancer survivor, patient advocate, and lead author of the BRIDGE survey (Bridging Gaps, Expanding Outreach – Metastatic Breast Cancer Patient Survey); and DONNA PELLETIER, a patient living with metastatic breast cancer for five years.

The public face of breast cancer has mainly been focused on survivorship and early detection, with little attention given to the women living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), the most advanced stage of the disease that has spread beyond the breast to other parts of the body. Through the efforts of breast cancer advocates nationwide, United States Congress passed a national proclamation of October 13th as National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day.  October 13th symbolizes a call to action to give those living with advanced disease a greater voice and visibility in the breast cancer community.
